Album price change – and a surprise new release

August 15th, 2010

Album price change.

It’s August 15th, so the day has come to put the price up on the digital downloads of Hour Of The Wolf. You can now download the album for $8USD or for $1USD per track. You can still pay us whatever price you want, just that the figure has to be at least $1 per track.

But wait there’s more!

One more track in fact. If you download the album you will also get a bonus 9th track for your hard earned $8. Or you can download the bonus track by itself for $1.

Pian Xin Ze An revisited.

The bonus track is called Pian Xin Ze An – Zen. It is an extended version of the opening track of the Mind Estate EP from 2007. We recorded it during the Hour Of the Wolf sessions, so this version has Stefan on drums instead of Tim who you hear on the original version. It has a different bass line in the middle section, a different tempo and a completely new section near the end. And the feel is quite different with Stefan on the drums. We hope you enjoy the changes as much as we do.

And as with all of our recordings, you can listen to Pian Xin Ze An – Zen in it’s entirety on bandcamp. In fact, click play here and you can listen to it now.

Oh and I hope you like the plasma effect on the player. Neat yeah?

Stay tuned for more surprises!

6 Unzip the album once it is downloaded
If you still have trouble just let me know and I’ll be happy to help.

It was August 15th 2009 that we released Hour Of the Wolf to a crowd of excited fans at the Tugboat in Wellington. In 3 weeks it will be one year since that night so we picked that date as the best time to change the pricing structure for the digital version of the album. Basically, you have 3 more weeks to download the entire album for free from riverblind.bandcamp.com. But don’t worry, you can continue to share it with your friends for as long as you care to – in fact, we encourage it!
The details on the price change:

From August 15th this year you will be able to download the digital tracks for $1USD each or $8USD for the whole album. Why is it in US dollars? Because we cater to the world (and you have to pick one currency on Paypal).

But until August 15th you can still download it all for free!

Why you can still share it:

Because that’s what music is for!

Riverblind encourages you to share any and all of our music with whomever you please (yes, that includes torrent sites). The digital product is infinitely repeatable at no extra cost, so there is no harm in having more copies of it floating around and getting heard by new listeners. It is far better than it not getting heard!

So, enjoy downloading it without worrying about money, and enjoy sharing it without worrying about the law. And when the album price does go up to a minimum amount, don’t worry, you can still get the album for free if you can find a friend to copy it off ;-)

A note on the copyright symbol we used:

Ok, you may have noticed that the CD and the digital tracks are coded with a traditional copyright symbol ©. And, yes, I know, we should have used creative commons licencing symbols if we wanted people to know they could share it. Sorry, that was an oversight on my part. And also there was confusion over the importance of being a part of APRA. Basically, APRA doesn’t appreciate the creative commons philosophy, but I’ll write more on that subject at a future date.

Oh and yes, we will play in Wellington again as soon as we can, thank you all for asking! We are looking at playing in September at an all ages show and then October for an R18 show. Sorry we can’t gig sooner – we’ve all been mega busy with a variety of different things (some to do with Riverblind, some not). We will let you know as soon as everything is confirmed, and when the time is right, we’ll also let you know some of the other things we’ve been preparing.

Take care and enjoy the rain! (Yeah right…)

BREAKING NEWS – The postal system works! New album gets delivered to the world!

September 2nd, 2009

Due to good service by various postal services both online and off, Hour Of The Wolf is now available to buy on CD and for digital download the world over. You can order a CD to be delivered to you from amplifier and you can get digital downloads from both amplifier and bandcamp. Read on for more details.cdbox1

This box contains the first 200 CDs of our new album Hour Of The Wolf.

Over 100 of these CDs are in the hands of those who attended our release show on August 15th. Another bunch of them are in the hands of those who missed the show and were so intent on getting copies they came to us directly. Another bunch are somewhere over the Pacific on their way to CDBaby in Portland USA. And finally there are the pile of CDs which have been successfully delivered to amplifier and are available for purchase.

That’s right, if you want a CD you no longer need to come up to my place and climb my windy path (thanks Carl). You no longer have to scramble to find cash when you’ve bumped into me or Dave at Jazz School or Airforce Band (thanks Nick Van Dyke and many more). You no longer have to get me to bring CDs to School of Rock (thanks Kane, Logan, Ben and the rest). You no longer have to ask me to bring a CD to your bass lesson (thanks Liam, Alex). You no longer have to figure out why your bank transfer didn’t make it into our account when you’ve asked me to send the CD via post (thanks Ngaio). You also don’t need to wait for me to find out what it costs to send the CD to the UK (sorry I haven’t done that yet Leah!).

You don’t have to worry about any of that (but we will still do it that way if you want a signed copy). Just visit amplifier and you can buy the CD, have it delivered and enjoy the album within a matter of days in most cases.

If you can’t wait that long then how about downloading the album from bandcamp where you can choose from a variety of bitrates ranging from 128K MP3 to FLAC and Apple Lossless.

Downloads are also the perfect option if you only want to get one or some of the tracks.

There will be more stores to choose from soon including itunes and CDBaby. I will continue to keep you up to date with all the stores that sell our music as they are setup.

Mini Documentary – Making Of Hour Of The Wolf

September 1st, 2009

Riverblind mini Doco from Riverblind Ltd on Vimeo.

Dave has finished putting together a video on the making of our album Hour Of The Wolf.

The 24 minute film begins at last year’s summer tour where we travelled the country and spent a week in Dunedin playing shows and writing new material – some of which made it on to the album and some which didn’t. It shows some of the frustrating sides to touring that us newbies had to learn about. The video also reveals part of the recording sessions with Richard Shirley our genius engineer and co-producer and takes you finally to the album release show two weeks ago.

I find it interesting, funny, cringeworthy, and informative, but let me know what YOU think.

Hour Of The Wolf worldwide release imminent

August 31st, 2009

hotwcoverWe are mere days away from the official worldwide release of Hour Of The Wolf.

We had the local release show here in Wellington on August 15th where everyone who came got to go home with a copy of the album before anyone else in the world. Since then there have been enquiries from around the world on how to obtain a copy of the album. Some of you have even been lucky enough to get a copy directly from us for your listening pleasure.

But things are about to get a whole lot easier for purchasing Hour Of The Wolf.

I have sent copies of the CD to amplifier.co.nz and CDBaby.com and these will be made available for order soon. You will also be able to get digital downloads of the album from both of these sites as well as www.riverblind.bandcamp.com and a host of other download sites such as itunes and Amazon. I will list all of the places you can buy from on the shop page as each place is finalised.

I will post again the moment CDs and downloads are made available from the first shops.

Keep in mind that you can still purchase CDs by contacting us directly through riverblind@riverblind.com – cost from us is $20NZ plus postage and we will sort out your order as quickly as we can. Just remember that this operation is still only 3 people strong so some orders can take longer than we might like. Ordering through us is also the best way to get signed copies too if you’re into that sort of thing :)

Thanks to everyone who has given us feedback so far. We appreciate all of it, good and bad, but of course we especially love that so many people are really enjoying the album. Continue to tell your friends and show them the album – we really appreciate the buzz you wonderful people are creating.

Thank you all and stay tuned :)

Hour Of The Wolf Competition

July 30th, 2009

http://www.flickr.com/photos/m500/2171378408/

I have set up a competition for you. You could win a signed copy of our album Hour Of The Wolf and more if you enter. Read on to find out how.

Today is the second anniversary of the death of legendary film maker Ingmar Bergman. Why do you need to know that? Ingmar Bergman made a film called Vargtimmen which translates as “Hour Of The Wolf”.

Our album is not exactly named after this film – we didn’t know much about the film until after the name was picked and I am still the only band member to have watched the film. But the root of the concept behind the name of both the film and our album is the same.

The “hour of the wolf” comes from Swedish folklore and refers to an hour between midnight and dawn from perhaps 4 until 5 in the morning. It is said to be the time when most people are born or die. It is when insomnia hits at its worst, revealing the haunting fears and demons that lurk in the deathly silence.

Our song tilted Hour Of The Wolf is about insomnia and indeed its working title was Insomniac. The film Hour Of the Wolf is about an artist who goes mad as he cannot sleep until dawn – the hour of the wolf presenting him with surreal and terrifying imaginings.

I’m sure you will have had some experience of insomnia. Perhaps you sleep badly on occasion. Maybe you are stalked most nights by the endless awake. Whatever your experience, I know you will have at least one good story to tell about a sleepless night. Did you wake up and couldn’t return to sleep, frightened of the shadows? Were you up all night and nothing could rest your mind into the land of slumber?

Whatever your story, we want to hear it. The best story wins a copy of the new album Hour Of The Wolf AND a free pass to the Album Release Show in Wellington on August 15th at The Tugboat*.

I am going to start off this story telling session by sharing my common experience of the hour of the wolf.

I so often manage to get to sleep by midnight only to wake up at 4am and suddenly am wide awake again. Nothing can change that moment, once I’m awake, I’m awake. I’ve given up trying to get back to sleep, it just aggravates the issue. So I usually get up once I wake these days and hope I feel tired again some hours later. But it can take 4 or 5 hours before that happens sometimes.

However the mindset that occurs at this time I can use to my advantage. I’ll focus on the silence, the darkness and the ominous calm. Underneath that potential for deep fear is a place of wonder, a dreamland that is normally only permitted in sleep.

Accessing this lets me create. Words, music, an ugly scribble, it doesn’t matter. Something is revealed from the depths in this hour of night. I have written my best music and lyrics in this time all the while groaning about how tired I will be when the sun comes up. But it has to been done. I have no choice. This is my hour of the wolf.

Comment below to tell us:

What is your hour of the wolf?

*If you win but are not in Wellington for the gig or can not make it that night, there are alternative prizes for you along with the album give away:

Entry to a future gig when we soon tour the country can be arranged or a copy of our Mind Estate EP.

The band will judge which story is deemed best and the judge’s decision is final.

Cut off date for entries is August 7th 2009 at 12:34pm NZST

Winner will be announced August 10th – winner will be contacted by email so make sure you put a valid email address when you sign in to comment.

Good Luck!

When an hour takes half a year.

July 26th, 2009

astronomical clockIt is 6 months to the day since we started recording Hour Of The Wolf.

On January 26th, after spending the previous day setting up, we started laying down tracks for guitar, bass and drums.

While that initial spell of recording only took us a week and a half, there have been many subsequent recording sessions since. Vocals, choir, strings and more. Not to mention a bucket load of mixing, analysing, re-mixing, rinse and repeat.

Finally, in less than 3 weeks, the album will be ready to share with you. Come down to the release show at the Tugboat in Wellington on August 15th to be among the first to receive a copy of Hour Of The Wolf.

Here is the track-listing we have chosen for the album:

Mute Signals

Cheshire Cat

Unsettled Scenes

Following The Blind

Veils

Flip Side Thumb

Hour Of The Wolf

Tunnel Vision

We can’t wait to give this to you at the gig and we look forward to hearing what you think.
